In this article chemical engineering education in Iran is reviewed. Some suggestions and modification are presented improving education in this field. It is believed that removing the titles of subspecialty from general title of chemical engineering would be beneficials to graduated, because they can find jobs in other area too. In entrance exam the weight of chemistry course should be reduced from a factor of 4 to 2, so the students with stronger math and physics can enter this field. A course of introduction to chemical engineering must be presented to freshmn student. Also it is suggested to pit more emphasis on math oriented software in chemical engineering. An introduction to chemical engineering literature and library search of freshmn students would be very helpful.

The systematic review of chemical engineering curriculum, including the Humanities, Social Sciences, Basic courses, Engineering Core and Technical specialties, is part of responsibilities of High Council of Cultural Revolution s subcommittees. This is a need for most of lecturers and the higher education system of Iran. In this paper a comparison is made between the content of physics, chemistry and mathematics taught in High schools and at the junior level of chemical engineering departments in Iran. The study shows that numerous existing overlaps between the topics at these two levels curriculum are the cause of students disappointment and their academic inefficiencies. The centralized planning of curriculum is not an adequate solution considering the diversity of admitted students skill level, different level of teachers skills and poorly equipped laboratories at high school. Considering the capabilities, qualities and capacities of big universities, the permission of independent education curriculum planning is a remedy. Furthermore basic Courses contents in chemical engineering curriculum should also be prepared in coordination with high school syllabuses.

As the freshmen of chemical engineering departments are not usually familiar with the content of curriculum and the fate of chemical engineering graduates, an introductory course with the title “Acquaintance with chemical engineering and industries” is introduced. The course is divided into 2 sections. In the first part, the main topics of chemical engineering will be briefly introduced by professors who teach these topics. In the second part, a number of visits to the main chemical process industries are included and student are obliged to prepare a comprehensive report for each visit. Evaluation of these reports and the mark of final exam will be considered as students achievement

At first, the term ”Process Engineering” is described as a more appropriate title for “Chemical Engineering” and based on that, the fundamental differences of the discipline compared to other branches of engineering are mentioned. Then, the content of the course as the most fundamental subject of the main chemical engineering courses is given and the position and importance of the course among the others is clarified. Ways for successful presentation and better understanding of students are also outlined.

The diversity of heat transfer applications is the basis for the preparation of this complementary course of 3 credits on a semester basis in undergraduate level. The heat transfer with phase change, radiations, heat exchanger brief description with F-LMTD and NTU methods are among the common topics with the mechanical engineering curriculum and available in many textbooks. Indeed, the heat transfer in agitated vessels and heat transfer in fired heaters are specific to chemical engineers. For these two topics attention is paid to the unsteady heating cooling in jacketed and coiled vessels, radiative heat transfer, convective boiling and two phase flow pressure drop in pipes. The time schedule and the quiz-final exam arrangements are described

The content of the 3-credit Mass Transfer Course for the undergraduate Chemical Engineering is reviewed. The diversity of applications and the nontangible complexity of this phenomenon should be considered. Use of Analogies between Transport Phenomena and adoption of adequate audiovisual means, as well as the respect of a balance between Analytical and Empirical correlations are recommended

Kinetics and reactor design is one of the distinct courses in Chemical Engineering curriculum. In this paper the importance of this coure and its relation to other courses of chemical engineering have been reviewed. It has been emphasized that one can use computational methods and tools to presents a course with a brad scope. Such a course will be essential to develop involvement of chemical engineers in new and multidisciplinary problems. A proposed course content with details about prerequisites, practical aspects and laboratory experiments and methods of evaluation of class performance have been given. The bulk of the materials in this paper is based on discussions of monthly meetings of Iranian Association of Chemical Engineers (IAChE), a workshop on Chemical Engineering Education (May 1-2, 2002, Tehran), and the Personal experience and view points of the authors.

The main objective of various Engineering field of study to develop various products and services based on recent advances in science and technology. In order to achive this objective, various engineering fields of study have a multidisciplinary nature in which all the topics covering various subjects related (either explicitly or implicitly) to them are offered in their curriculums.
As the new techniques and theories emerges in various scientific and technological areas the curriculum and syllabus of engineering fields utilizing those areas should also be revised and updated in order to accommodate these enhancements and developments. Chemical Engineering like other engineering areas also requires the continuous revision and update in its curriculum. The first workshop in Chemical Engineering Education was taken place in order to fulfill this requirement. This paper summarizes all the aspects and issues corresponding to teaching of the “process control” course in the chemical engineering curriculum. Updated and revised syllabus as well as teaching and evaluating mechanisms are explained and the required courseware’s to accomplish the teaching objectives are reviewed.

At first, the merit of plant design and economics course in the chemical engineering curriculum as mortar to adhere the other courses together for constructing a chemical plant is illustrated and then, with regard to the position of this course, the main syllabus and time allocation for each chapter is described. Teaching style and method, position and back ground of students at the time of registration and cooperation of the other member of staff are also considered and in continuation, the lecturer qualification and industrial experiences is recognized. Design project as an important supplement of the main course has also emphasized. At the end, the number and the content of each examination and the appropriate way of student evaluation is suggested to the benefit of young and less experienced lecturer.
