Abstract
In recent years, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has driven the oil and gas industry away from traditional, reactive approaches toward intelligent, predictive, and self-optimizing operations. This study first provides a comprehensive review of AI applications across the upstream, midstream, and downstream sectors of the oil and gas industry and subsequently examines, from a conceptual perspective, the potential for its implementation within the Iranian Offshore Oil Company. Based on the review, nine key application areas were identified: intelligent asset integrity and condition monitoring, maintenance of critical equipment, production and operations optimization, advanced reservoir characterization and modeling, offshore logistics and supply chain optimization, safety and emergency response, digital twins and flare reduction, crude oil desalting, and subsea maintenance. The findings indicate that AI can enhance predictive and optimization capabilities, thereby improving efficiency, safety, maintenance effectiveness, and overall operational performance in offshore activities. Furthermore, given the importance of human capital development, a roadmap for integrating AI into industrial engineering education is proposed across five key dimensions: curriculum redesign, educational innovation, faculty development, infrastructure development, and the promotion of entrepreneurship.
